James Loizou Sr., founder of JSDA, was laid to rest today. One of his grandsons created a short tribute video and wrote some beautiful words that we wanted to share in honor of our founder’s amazing life and legacy!

A tribute to Papou

“For 93 years, James Loizou — Papou — shared his love, wisdom and voice with generations.

For some, he was known as a scholar. Chanter. Dance instructor. Cyprus advocate. Traveler of worlds. Grower of fig trees. McDonalds-enthusiast.

For many, he was simply Papou — a gentle, larger-than-life presence, known for his curiosity, generous spirit and passion for telling a good joke.

His signature stories were a performance, defined by deep, bellowing impersonations, comical misunderstandings and high-pitched giggles erupting moments before his own punchline.

We now remember and retell Papou’s near-mythological legacy — to pass down his love for life, family and halloumi cheese.”
